The boomerang is a curved piece of light weight material usually wood or plastic. It is designed in a way to travel large distances and has been used for millennia by the Aboriginal people of Australia as a hunting tool and a weapon.

Some boomerangs are made for hunting or weapons while others, the returning boomerangs are made for fun. The best known boomerang is the one that returns when thrown, the returning boomerang. You have probably seen it many times and it is easily recognizable because of its curved shape. Even though not all boomerangs are made to return when thrown the ones that do, do so because of their shape. In most cases boomerangs are light weight pieces of timber and recently hard plastic.

Nevertheless, when thrown correctly these seemingly simply crafted objects return, on their own to the spot they were thrown from. There is no magic involved in this process or no tricks. Boomerangs return because of the laws of physics that work in relation to their distinct shape.

Boomerangs fly because of the high pressure that develops underneath their wing while the top creates a low pressure area. Just like in planes the boomerang top surface is a bit longer than the surface underneath and when air travels faster underneath resulting in lift. The returning boomerangs have the shape of an airplanes wing and they utilize drag forces to lift them in the air.

Keep in mind that in the returning boomerang one wing, the wing arm is a bit different than the handle one. As a result when thrown in the air one pulls the other in an angle. As it continues its flight the lift from the one corner makes the boomerang to at some point turn back and head to its starting position.

Whether a boomerang will return or not also depends on the way it is thrown. This requires some practice because it is important to get the right amount of spin in the throw. Boomerang throwing experts suggest you pull it free from your hand when throwing. This way the boomerang will have the ideal flight path and return in your hand.
